Gallina and Favaro
In 1906, my great great grandfather Gallina came to the US to find work during the famine in Sicily. He came over and found work and then sent for his family a year later. When my great grandmother was old enough to be married, they arranged a marriage between her and a man in Sicily and sent for him to come to the US. My great grandfather Favaro came over and married my great grandmother in 1916. They had two little girls before he died of influenza in 1920. She was left to raise two little girls alone, so her family quickly arranged for her to marry another man from Italy, and they were married a couple of years later.
The Favaro name was lost for 80 years because of the remarriage, until I started doing my genealogy. No one in my family really knew we were not from this other family that my great grandmother had married into until 2003 when I took a genealogy trip over Spring Break and found my true great grandfather and his grave. It was the most amazing trip and a blessing to me and my family.
This is why I encourage everyone to do their genealogy. You never know what you'll find and some times it is will be life changing, but most of the time it will lead you to new found family that will bless your lives.
